The Reece

the ‘recce’

Provide answers in paragraph form to the questions below that

are relevant to your production.

1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects)?
I have ideas for a location shoot and a studio orientated look. If my model was to be photographed in an outside environment then they would be at risk from certain conditions (if near a road traffic) or if the weather has been unfavourable they could potentially injure him or herself due to wetness (puddles etc.) or mud. I also wouldn’t want my model to feel uncomfortable due to coldness and discomfort at the conditions. If indoors they may be in danger of tripping on props (chairs, musical instruments), if there is a wide variety of lighting used then the model could potentially trip on wires or cables
2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?
I will try and organise a day if it is a location shoot to have fair weather conditions, reducing the chances of them getting wet, slipping on damp ground etc. If however the environment is unfavourable that day I will reschedule the shoot to take place in the near future, allowing time for the weather to change and clear up to something more pleasant. The setting of the shoot will be in a quiet secluded area away from the public and traffic so the model has a less likely chance of being injured, there will also be more privacy as there wont be hopefully any pedestrians in the vicinity.
3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?
I’ll hopefully be able to organise my shoot to take place during the early/late afternoon. I’m conscious of how bad lighting can affect the quality of my images and I want them to appear as glossy and professional as possible. I’d like to have my model displayed in a location but if the natural lighting is worse for wear (dark, dismal, misty) then I will revert to a studio based one where I can control the lighting.
4.    Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?
For an outdoors styled shoot I would like trees to be included in the background, this sort of environment/scenario is relatively easy to find so I don’t think this will affect the quality of my background. Trees can be found in country parks and local areas so I wont have to look hard.
5.    Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?
Natural lighting might affect the quality of the images by distorting them and making certain details to bright and undistinguishable. I will try and arrange my shoot if its outside at the time of day when the natural light from the sun is prime. I will obtain other lighting equipment such as strobes in case additional support is required.
6.    Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?
No I wont need permission as it will either be in my house or a public area
7.    Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio at Shiney)?
No I will be using my own indoor facilities
8.    Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?
To avoid this happening I will inform people who may be in the facility that there will be a photoshoot taking place. Another way is to time the shoot so as no other pople will be around at that time of day.
9.    Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?
I will be supplying my own lighting equipment and props, the costumes will also be supplied by me unless the modle themselves has something more of standard. If the model does not have anything they want to work in my Plan B would be to supply my own to them. If I had difficulty in obtaining costumes I would ask others for support if they had what I desired.

10. Finally, have you thought of every eventuality…?

I have already thought through about what to do if a prop breaks, setting is inadequate or for the model cancelling last minute. If something crops up that isn’t accouted for I will arrange another shoot or get what I need so the shoot can carry on.
