It was important for me to note that I could not just select anyone to be my models of choice for the image relating to my music magazine, I had to draw careful consideration around who would most appropriately fit the genre of music I am aiming as my focus (indie/alternative rock) It could potentially be off putting to the audience if the models in the articles do not personify to be an artist you would typically expect to be immersed in that type of audio, in essence the most effective way to relate to my target readers is to visually present a realistic impression of the types of individuals they would anticipate to see in an unconventional and unique alternative magazine production. Therefore I researched and planned thoroughly to who would be most appropriate as candidates to pose as the artists for my products.
Name : Kate Wetherell
Age : 19
As I intended my main feature of the double page spread to focus upon a female artist, essentially I needed to gain the permission of one to use. This would normally give me a wide scope of different women to choose from as I desired a young 18-25 year old blonde to pose as the potential solo musician in question, this individual would be used as the cover and double page spread photograph so ultimately this was the model I needed desperately. However there was one major complication and that was generated from the proposition that they needed to conform to the more specific criteria I had set which revolved around them having to have a very 'edgy' look about them. They needed to relate to the indie/alternative visual sub type, which is all about big messy hair, vintage clothing with dark eye make up, this would allow my audience to identify from a solely visual viewpoint the genre of my product and the kind of artists they can anticipate in the contents. Out of all the girls in my friendship circle only one of them conformed perfectly with the concept I had in mind. I immeditelly contacted the model in question (Kate) to see if not only she was available any time soon to participate but also if she was comfortable with the notion as acting as a model. After briefing her she was relatively happy with the conditions set in place so it was a clear indication for me she was content with the thought of being included in my coursework.
Name : Matthew Corner
Age : 15
Essentially it was vital for me to obtain extra models as well as my primary focus for two important reasons
1. I needed images for the contents page to make it more visually appealing and authentic looking
2. They would act as a back up in case the main model decided to drop out
As I am attempting to attract a wide range of readers, it would be important for me to include male artists as well as females in the articles of my magazine, therefore just as many male readers will be intrigued by my product as it is just not limiting it to one specific sex in question (this is typically seen within fashion magazines when women are normally the sole target audience) This moreover will generate a greater variety of universality in the production, gaining more reader appeal then that of a music magazine with only one gender in mind. Getting a male model in itself can prove difficult as it is not a conventional role most men are interested in participating for due to gender stereotypes and how it is not 'normal' for a male to get his photograph taken. I don't have many in my friendship group who would be willing to take part so instead I asked my brother if he would be interested in doing it, this did not turn into a problem as he was more then happy to engage with the idea of my courswork. As Kate would be posing for the main article, meaning she would be included on the front cover and double page spread, the role of my brother would to be one of the additional photographs within the contents page to indicate to the audience there is more interesting features for them to immerse themselves in. Another issue I had to keep in consideration was the conformity of my model appearing to display an professional mainstream indie/alternative artist, so in this respect they would have to look the part. The male model would need a similar edgy look to their appearance, messy or big hair, stylish if grungy attire and be in the age range of 18-25. I'm fortunate that my brother looks older then his actual biological age and since he looks more mature then the young adults I know he will do nicely as the male artist displayed. On first inspection he classicly fits the main impression of what alternative rock artists look like, he has the appropriate hair, fashion sense and facial features for the role, uncannily he bears a close resemblence to Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys cult band due to how he comes across visually, this makes him an even stronger candidate for a male model.
Name : Aimee Corner
Age : 18
I have already predicted I will have trouble gaining more female models to act as extras for the contents page, due to time constraints and work loads with their own A levels, availability time and the most obvious being they may not wish to take part and so decline, under this respect I have decided to use myself as a music artist if the situation arised that I could not gain anyone else to particpate. I have the wardrobe necessary to make me look as a realistic indie/alternative composer as possible, this saves me valuable time management in the thought I will not need to go out to purchase outfits. It would not be a problem to alter my hair and the makeup for the part either. In addition I have also saved myself some trouble as I will not need to gain consent for the right to use the model as I have already concluded I am happy to use myself if it comes to verdict my presence is required. My age just fits into the range of 18-25 which I specified as the requirement, so intending all goes well the photographs of me will not make me look younger then what is intended for the niche audience of my magazine.
Importantly all of my models will be briefed closer to the date about the clothing, makeup and location of the shoot to essentially allow them to be prepared, if not it could be detrimental to my work if they came on the day in the incorrect costume or had no understanding what is expected of them. They will be given instructions on how to get to the setting (to avoid them getting lost) and each will be given the opportunity to withdraw their images taken if they decide after the shoot they are unhappy about taking part.
